Colonel Bob's Newsletter: Maybe you hear a different drummer.

Dear friends and boot campers:

This past week one of the quotes after class really stuck in my mind:

"If  a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."
Henry David Thoreau 1817-1862
Writer and Philosopher

Whether it's workouts, workplace, studies or interaction with each others, all of us have our individual rhythm that takes us where we want to go. The reasons for this can be varied: upbringing, environment, special life challenges, illness and quality of relationships with those around us. Let's be willing to give each other the opportunity to follow the drummer we hear and enjoy the journey just as much, maybe more.

Last night during beach boot camp, we had someone who needed to modify the running due to a recent leg injury. He was concerned that he would hold up the class because of this. My response, "During running drills everyone else will keep running until you reach the goal." He found out that running backwards was actually easier on his injury and so all still got what they needed.
