If any of you would like to send condolences to his sister Penny and/or brother Dale, please send an email to thehealthcolonel@beachbootcamp.net and I will forward the addresses of both to you.

Memorial to Tom Bartlett who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014

I would like to honor Tom Bartlett who passed away after fighting cancer for the past couple of years. He was a friend and one who attended beach boot camp since around 2004. He was also an army veteran. Memorial services are planned at a later date and will be announced as soon as they are known. He is survived by his sister Penny, brother Dale, another brother and mother as well as other family members.

Here is a snapshot of some photos with Tom for the past many years:

Fall season is upon us; time to find that new fitness routine

As Bob Dylan so rightfully said in a song, "The times they are a changin'", though there are some things that never and should not change. Know the difference. How we treat each other and taking care of the body are some of the basic rules of life that have been granted to us. We can take them or leave them. That is our personal choice.

And yes, we do get off track every now and then. Just make sure that does not become permanent. If you've been attending beach boot camp 2 times per week and doing a total of 300 jumping jacks and 100 pushups per week in class, that accumulates to 15,600 jumping jacks and  5,200 pushups in a year! Conversely, if you stop or never started, your weekly total is 0 and we know what that means for your yearly total. Most importantly, we know what that means for our health.

So the question is, when is the best time to get back on track?

The best time to start is now. I can already hear the excuses: too busy, too out of shape, too tired and many others. None of the excuses cut it. We are busy, but cannot be too busy for our health. You may be out of shape, but you can always simply do what you CAN do to start now to get back on track. We may be too tired, BUT there is a paradox about exercise when it comes to being tired; exercise gives us more energy and gets the blood circulation flowing.

Beach boot camp in Fort Lauderdale runs three times per week for all fitness levels. It is your chance to accumulate those jumping jacks and pushups your body so needs and you will workout with a great bunch of people and have some fun while doing it.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT? CONSISTENCY OR INTENSITY?

COLONEL BOB' NEWSLETTER, AUGUST 2014

QUOTE TO THINK ABOUT:

"To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step in knowledge." -- Benjamin Disraeli

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT? CONSISTENCY OR INTENSITY?

Many fitness programs offer a quick fix by tempting with intense fitness programs. The weight loss industry applies that same principle and rakes in billions of dollar. Intensity may be good for a kick-start but it is not the solution.

Consistency is hands down the most important principle to be applied when it come to eating and exercise for the general population. Why is this? The answer to this question can be found in the purpose of health eating and exercise. The answer is that fitness and food are health focused, not athletic or combat training focused.

The next time you catch yourself going for an intense program, step back and evaluate your motives. If an overall plan of consistency is not being implemented, your intense program is not health focused.
